As time passes by, minerals are added to and taken from your smile. One of these minerals is known as fluoride, and fluoride is one of the essential minerals that your smile needs to survive. With the proper fluoride intake, your smile is able to fight off tooth decay and other dental issues. However, sometimes the natural resources we consume don’t give us quite the right amount of fluoride for our strong pearly whites. So we encourage you to do your best to increase your fluoride intake by doing the following things:

1. Drink fluoridated water as much as possible. This is easier than you think because each community has a certain amount of fluoride added to the city tap water.
2. Use oral hygiene products that have fluoride in them. Some of these products could be fluoride toothpaste and fluoride mouthwash. If you just brush your teeth every morning and every night with fluoride toothpaste and rinse your mouth once a day with fluoride mouthwash, you will be on the right track.
3. Get a professional fluoride treatment. Each time you come into our office for a dental cleaning and exam, your dentist or dental hygienist will give you a fluoride treatment that will come in the form of a foam, gel or varnish. This treatment will generally be provided after your teeth have been deeply cleaned and before your smile is examined.

If you have any questions about the beneficial fluoride mineral, we invite you to call our office at 703-858-5990 and ask a member of our caring dental team. We would love to teach you all we know about fluoride!
