What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an increasingly popular orthodontic treatment used to correct dental alignment and spacing issues. Instead of traditional metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of BPA-free plastic aligners to guide your teeth into their corrected position. Dr. Chung corrects a variety of dental imperfections with Invisalign, including:
- Malocclusion issues (overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites)
- Overcrowding
- Gaps between your teeth
- Crooked teeth
How does Invisalign work?
Dr. Chung begins Invisalign treatment with an assessment to determine if it’s the best option to address your concerns. He takes digital images of your teeth, which are used to not only design your perfect smile but also create a series of custom aligners that will guide your teeth into their new corrected positions over a period of several months.
Unlike traditional braces, where you have frequent appointments for your orthodontist to incrementally tighten your archwire, you will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks. For the first eight weeks, you will meet with Dr. Chung bi-weekly so he can check your progress and give you your next set of aligners.
Once Dr. Chung is satisfied that your treatment is progressing as expected and that you have gotten used to your aligners, he gives you 2-4 sets of aligners, which you change at home on your own. You’ll still have checkups, but only every 4-8 weeks so Dr. Chung can check your progress.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable and virtually invisible. No one can see your aligners when you wear them unless they look very closely at your mouth.
You can take your aligners out for short periods of time to eat and clean your teeth but you must wear the aligners for 22-23 hours each day for the treatment to be effective. You don't need to give up your favorite foods, and it's easy to take care of your teeth, because you don't have to brush and floss around brackets, wires, and bands.
