If you are lucky, you may get through the flu season without getting sick. But even if you avoid the flu, you may catch a cold or a virus which can land you in bed for a day or two. At that point, you will probably want to stay there with a good book or your tablet and wait quietly to get better.
The last thing that you will probably want to do is crawl out of bed or get off the couch, slog to the bathroom and brush and floss your teeth. But taking care of your teeth is not something from which you can take a break. You need to continue to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. But there are other things you can do to keep your teeth healthy when you are feeling under the weather.
For example, cough drops, and cough syrup can make you feel better. But when you are shopping for either, make sure that your cough drops are sugar-free, since you will be holding them in your mouth for a while. If your cough syrup contains sugar, you should rinse your mouth after you take a dose. If you throw up, you should rinse your mouth afterward with a mixture of water and a teaspoon of baking soda, and brush your teeth thirty minutes later. Staying hydrated is important when you are sick, and water is the best choice for doing so. If a cup of tea will make you feel better, enjoy it without sugar or lemon. Sports drinks may make you feel better and add electrolytes to your body, but you should limit them since they can contain sugar.
