Your teeth are complex biological mineral structures composed of many layers. Tooth enamel is the outermost layer. It is intended to be strong enough to chew and grind food and protect the sensitive internal structures of the tooth. Unfortunately, poor oral hygiene habits and regularly consuming acidic foods and beverages can weaken the integrity of the tooth enamel, leaving the entire tooth vulnerable to serious complications.

This process, known as demineralization, can weaken your tooth enamel if it is not counteracted somehow. Exposing your teeth to fluoride helps restore this microscopic mineral erosion. This process, known as remineralization, can help reverse sensitivity and prevent new cavities from forming.

If you aren’t getting adequate fluoride exposure in your average day, your dentist, Dr. Jun H Chung, might recommend receiving a basic fluoride treatment and taking prescription fluoride supplements. This might come in the form of sublingual tabs, gels, mouth rinses or a concentrated fluoride toothpaste.

Ingestible fluoride supplements need to be taken at the prescribed times. If Dr. Jun H Chung prescribe a concentrated fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, you should brush or rinse with them right before going to sleep or at a time when you can refrain from eating or drinking for at least a half hour. This will allow the fluoride to penetrate the microscopic textures of the tooth enamel.

You can also help strengthen your tooth enamel by making sure you’re using a brand of toothpaste with added fluoride.
